KNOWING GOD – THE GOD OF LOVE || Lesson 10

KNOWING GOD – THE GOD OF LOVE

[With Reference to the Events Concerning Jesus’ “Passion,” note how Jesus’ love is amazingly displayed throughout and therefore ‘stand in awe of God, the Most High.’]

Lesson Ten

AT THE COENACULUM, name of traditional place of the Last Supper.

Text:  (NIV) Matthew 26:17-35 (Mark 14:12-31; Luke 22:7-38; John 13 & 14)

Events Relating to the Coenaculum (Cont’d)

Prediction of Jesus’ SufferingLuke 22:35-3835Then Jesus asked them, “When I sent you without purse, bag or sandals, did you lack anything?”

“Nothing,” they answered.

36He said to them, “But now if you have a purse, take it, and also a bag; and if you don’t have a sword, sell your cloak and buy one. 37It is written: `And he was numbered with the transgressors’; and I tell you that this must be fulfilled in me. Yes, what is written about me is reaching its fulfillment.”

38The disciples said, “See, Lord, here are two swords.”

“That is enough,” he replied.

(V.35)“When I sent you without purse, bag or sandals, did you lack anything?”  “Nothing,” they answered.  Note Luke 9:1-6, 10 – When Jesus had called the Twelve together, he gave them power and authority to drive out all demons and to cure diseases, 2and he sent them out to preach the kingdom of God and to heal the sick.  3He told them: “Take nothing for the journey-no staff, no bag, no bread, no money, no extra tunic.  4Whatever house you enter, stay there until you leave that town.  5If people do not welcome you, shake the dust off your feet when you leave their town, as a testimony against them.”  6So they set out and went from village to village, preaching the gospel and healing people everywhere.

10When the apostles returned, they reported to Jesus what they had done. Then he took them with him and they withdrew by themselves to a town called Bethsaida,

(V.36) – (CEV) Jesus told them, “But now, if you have a moneybag, take it with you. Also take a traveling bag, and if you don’t have a sword, sell some of your clothes and buy one.  [CEV note: “moneybag … traveling bag … sword: These were things that someone would take on a dangerous journey.  Jesus was telling his disciples to be ready for anything that might happen.  They seem to have understood what he meant (see 22:49-51).”]

Luke 22:49-51 (CEV)49When Jesus’ disciples saw what was about to happen, they asked, “Lord, should we attack them with a sword?” 50One of the disciples even struck at the high priest’s servant with his sword and cut off the servant’s right ear.

51“Enough of that!” Jesus said. Then he touched the servant’s ear and healed it.

(V.37)It is written: `And he was numbered with the transgressors’Isaiah 53:12 – Therefore I will give him a portion among the great, and he will divide the spoils with the strong, because he poured out his life unto death, and was numbered with the transgressors. For he bore the sin of many, and made intercession for the transgressors.

(V.38)The disciples said, “See, Lord, here are two swords.”  “That is enough,” he replied.  Note John 18:36 – Jesus said, “My kingdom is not of this world. If it were, my servants would fight to prevent my arrest by the Jews. But now my kingdom is from another place.”

Compare: Luke 22:52-5352Then Jesus said to the chief priests, the officers of the temple guard, and the elders, who had come for him, “Am I leading a rebellion, that you have come with swords and clubs? 53Every day I was with you in the temple courts, and you did not lay a hand on me. But this is your hour–when darkness reigns.”

Mark 14:48-4948“Am I leading a rebellion,” said Jesus, “that you have come out with swords and clubs to capture me? 49Every day I was with you, teaching in the temple courts, and you did not arrest me. But the Scriptures must be fulfilled.”

But the Scriptures must be fulfilled Note: Isaiah 53:4-5 (GNT) – 4 “But he endured the suffering that should have been ours, the pain that we should have borne. All the while we thought that his suffering was punishment sent by God.  5 But because of our sins he was wounded, beaten because of the evil we did. We are healed by the punishment he suffered, made whole by the blows he received.

Acts 26:22-2322But I have had God’s help to this very day, and so I stand here and testify to small and great alike. I am saying nothing beyond what the prophets and Moses said would happen– 23that the Christ would suffer and, as the first to rise from the dead, would proclaim light to his own people and to the Gentiles.”

Hebrews 2:9-109But we see Jesus, who was made a little lower than the angels, now crowned with glory and honor because he suffered death, so that by the grace of God he might taste death for everyone.

10In bringing many sons to glory, it was fitting that God, for whom and through whom everything exists, should make the author of their salvation perfect through suffering.

Application: Let us ask the GOD OF LOVE to help us to obtain maximum benefit from the following:

Hebrews 4:14-1614Therefore, since we have a great high priest who has gone through the heavens, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold firmly to the faith we profess. 15For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but we have one who has been tempted in every way, just as we are–yet was without sin. 16Let us then approach the throne of grace with confidence, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help us in our time of need.
