Lesson Twenty-seven – V.32
Examples of the ancients who were commended for their faith: (Cont’d.)
DAVID [Part 1]: V.32 – And what more shall I say? I do not have time to tell about Gideon, Barak, Samson, Jephthah, David, Samuel and the prophets,
David’s life was characterized by his reverence for the LORD and his acknowledgement of the LORD as:
Deliverer – 1 Samuel 17:37, 45-47 – 37The LORD who delivered me from the paw of the lion and the paw of the bear will deliver me from the hand of this Philistine.” Saul said to David, “Go, and the LORD be with you.”
45David said to the Philistine, “You come against me with sword and spear and javelin, but I come against you in the name of the LORD Almighty, the God of the armies of Israel, whom you have defied. 46This day the LORD will hand you over to me, and I’ll strike you down and cut off your head. Today I will give the carcasses of the Philistine army to the birds of the air and the beasts of the earth, and the whole world will know that there is a God in Israel. 47All those gathered here will know that it is not by sword or spear that the LORD saves; for the battle is the LORD’s, and he will give all of you into our hands.”
Let us thank the Lord that He is pointing us to: Psalm 3:8 – From the LORD comes deliverance. May your blessing be on your people. Selah
Galatians 1:3-5 – 3Grace and peace to you from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ, 4who gave himself for our sins to rescue us from the present evil age, according to the will of our God and Father, 5to whom be glory for ever and ever. Amen.
2 Timothy 4:18 – The Lord will rescue me from every evil attack and will bring me safely to his heavenly kingdom. To him be glory for ever and ever. Amen.
Counselor and Guide – 1 Samuel 23:1-4 – When David was told, “Look, the Philistines are fighting against Keilah and are looting the threshing floors,” 2he inquired of the LORD, saying, “Shall I go and attack these Philistines?”
The LORD answered him, “Go, attack the Philistines and save Keilah.”
3But David’s men said to him, “Here in Judah we are afraid. How much more, then, if we go to Keilah against the Philistine forces!”
4Once again David inquired of the LORD, and the LORD answered him, “Go down to Keilah, for I am going to give the Philistines into your hand.”
Let us thank the Lord that He is reminding us of: Psalm 32:8 – I will instruct you and teach you in the way you should go; I will counsel you and watch over you.
Proverbs 3:5-6 – 5Trust in the LORD with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; 6in all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make your paths straight.
Righteous God – Psalm 4:1 – Answer me when I call to you, O my righteous God. Give me relief from my distress; be merciful to me and hear my prayer.
Let us thank the Lord that He is hereby leading us to: 2 Timothy 4:8 – Now there is in store for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous Judge, will award to me on that day–and not only to me, but also to all who have longed for his appearing.
1 John 2:1 – My dear children, I write this to you so that you will not sin. But if anybody does sin, we have one who speaks to the Father in our defense–Jesus Christ, the Righteous One.
Majestic – Psalm 8:1 – O LORD, our Lord, how majestic is your name in all the earth! You have set your glory above the heavens.
Let us thank the Lord that He is directing us to: Hebrews 1:3-4 – 3The Son is the radiance of God’s glory and the exact representation of his being, sustaining all things by his powerful word. After he had provided purification for sins, he sat down at the right hand of the Majesty in heaven. 4So he became as much superior to the angels as the name he has inherited is superior to theirs.
2 Peter 1:16-18 – 16We did not follow cleverly invented stories when we told you about the power and coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, but we were eyewitnesses of his majesty. 17For he received honor and glory from God the Father when the voice came to him from the Majestic Glory, saying, “This is my Son, whom I love; with him I am well pleased.” 18We ourselves heard this voice that came from heaven when we were with him on the sacred mountain.
Shepherd – See Psalm 23 – (V.1 – The LORD is my shepherd, I shall not be in want.)
Let us thank the Lord for the comfort of John 10:11, 14-15 – 11“I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep.
14“I am the good shepherd; I know my sheep and my sheep know me–15just as the Father knows me and I know the Father–and I lay down my life for the sheep.
David’s acknowledgement of the LORD in Psalm 110:1 was accepted by Jesus and used by Him to silence the Pharisees. Matthew 22:41-46 – 41While the Pharisees were gathered together, Jesus asked them, 42“What do you think about the Christ? Whose son is he?”
“The son of David,” they replied.
43He said to them, “How is it then that David, speaking by the Spirit, calls him ‘Lord’? For he says,
44” ‘The Lord said to my Lord: “Sit at my right hand until I put your enemies under your feet.” ‘
45If then David calls him ‘Lord,’ how can he be his son?” 46No one could say a word in reply, and from that day on no one dared to ask him any more questions.
Note: Matthew 7:21-23 – 21“Not everyone who says to me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven, but only he who does the will of my Father who is in heaven. 22Many will say to me on that day, ‘Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in your name, and in your name drive out demons and perform many miracles?’ 23Then I will tell them plainly, ‘I never knew you. Away from me, you evildoers!’
John 17:3 – Now this is eternal life: that they may know you, the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom you have sent.
Let us therefore ask the Lord to help us to emulate David in knowing Him as Lord.
