FAITH
Text: Hebrews 11
Lesson Fourteen – V.27-29
Examples of the ancients who were commended for their faith: (Cont’d.)
MOSES [Part 3]: V.27-29 – 27By faith he left Egypt, not fearing the king’s anger; he persevered because he saw him who is invisible. 28By faith he kept the Passover and the sprinkling of blood, so that the destroyer of the firstborn would not touch the firstborn of Israel.
29By faith the people passed through the Red Sea as on dry land; but when the Egyptians tried to do so, they were drowned.
(V.27a) – By faith he left Egypt, not fearing the king’s anger – Note Exodus 10:27-29 – 27But the LORD hardened Pharaoh’s heart, and he was not willing to let them go. 28Pharaoh said to Moses, “Get out of my sight! Make sure you do not appear before me again! The day you see my face you will die.”
29“Just as you say,” Moses replied, “I will never appear before you again.”
Let us thank the Lord for having helped us to “leave the kingdom of darkness.” Colossians 1:12-14 – 12giving thanks to the Father, who has qualified you to share in the inheritance of the saints in the kingdom of light. 13For he has rescued us from the dominion of darkness and brought us into the kingdom of the Son he loves, 14in whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins.
1 Peter 2:9 – But you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people belonging to God, that you may declare the praises of him who called you out of darkness into his wonderful light.
Let us also thank the Lord for helping us in “not fearing the enemy’s anger,” in accordance with:
1 Peter 5:8-9 – 8Be self-controlled and alert. Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour. 9Resist him, standing firm in the faith, because you know that your brothers throughout the world are undergoing the same kind of sufferings.
See Ephesians 6:10-18. (Ephesians 6:10-12 – 10Finally, be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power. 11Put on the full armor of God so that you can take your stand against the devil’s schemes. 12For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms.)
(V.27b) – … he persevered because he saw him who is invisible – Let us thank the Lord for using this to point us to:
Luke 21:19 – By standing firm you will gain life.
John 20:28-29 – 28Thomas said to him, “My Lord and my God!”
29Then Jesus told him, “Because you have seen me, you have believed; blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed.”
2 Timothy 1:12 – That is why I am suffering as I am. Yet I am not ashamed, because I know whom I have believed, and am convinced that he is able to guard what I have entrusted to him for that day.
Hebrews 10:36 – You need to persevere so that when you have done the will of God, you will receive what he has promised.
Hebrews 12:1-4 – Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles, and let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us. 2Let us fix our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy set before him endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God. 3Consider him who endured such opposition from sinful men, so that you will not grow weary and lose heart.
4In your struggle against sin, you have not yet resisted to the point of shedding your blood.
Revelation 3:11 – I am coming soon. Hold on to what you have, so that no one will take your crown.
(V.28) – By faith he kept the Passover and the sprinkling of blood, so that the destroyer of the firstborn would not touch the firstborn of Israel. See Exodus 12. Note Exodus 12:28 – The Israelites did just what the LORD commanded Moses and Aaron.
Let us ask the Lord to help us to emulate the Israelites by obeying His commands. Note:
1 Corinthians 5:7 – Get rid of the old yeast that you may be a new batch without yeast–as you really are. For Christ, our Passover lamb, has been sacrificed.
Galatians 1:3-5 – 3Grace and peace to you from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ, 4who gave himself for our sins to rescue us from the present evil age, according to the will of our God and Father, 5to whom be glory for ever and ever. Amen.
(V.29) – By faith the people passed through the Red Sea as on dry land; but when the Egyptians tried to do so, they were drowned. See Exodus 13:17-14:31. This was celebrated with the song of victory recorded in Exodus 15:1-21.
Note Revelation 15:2-4 – 2And I saw what looked like a sea of glass mixed with fire and, standing beside the sea, those who had been victorious over the beast and his image and over the number of his name. They held harps given them by God 3and sang the song of Moses the servant of God and the song of the Lamb:
“Great and marvelous are your deeds, Lord God Almighty. Just and true are your ways, King of the ages. 4Who will not fear you, O Lord, and bring glory to your name? For you alone are holy. All nations will come and worship before you, for your righteous acts have been revealed.”
Let us thank the Lord for continuing to encourage us to aspire to produce “the worthy fruit of faith.”
1 John 5:4-5 – 4for everyone born of God overcomes the world. This is the victory that has overcome the world, even our faith. 5Who is it that overcomes the world? Only he who believes that Jesus is the Son of God.
