FAITH

Text:  Hebrews 11

Lesson Thirteen – V.24-26

Examples of the ancients who were commended for their faith: (Cont’d.)

MOSES [Part 2]: V.24-2624By faith Moses, when he had grown up, refused to be known as the son of Pharaoh’s daughter.  25He chose to be mistreated along with the people of God rather than to enjoy the pleasures of sin for a short time.  26He regarded disgrace for the sake of Christ as of greater value than the treasures of Egypt, because he was looking ahead to his reward.

(V.24)By faith Moses, when he had grown up, refused to be known as the son of Pharaoh’s daughter.  See Exodus 2:3-10 for the account of how Moses became the son of Pharaoh’s daughter.

(V.25-26a)He chose to be mistreated along with the people of God rather than to enjoy the pleasures of sin for a short time.  26He regarded disgrace for the sake of Christ as of greater value than the treasures of Egypt – Let us ask the Lord to help us to emulate Moses, in keeping with:

Romans 12:1-2 – Therefore, I urge you, brothers, in view of God’s mercy, to offer your bodies as living sacrifices, holy and pleasing to God-this is your spiritual act of worship.  2Do not conform any longer to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is–his good, pleasing and perfect will.

Romans 13:14 – Rather, clothe yourselves with the Lord Jesus Christ, and do not think about how to gratify the desires of the sinful nature.

1 Peter 2:11 – Dear friends, I urge you, as aliens and strangers in the world, to abstain from sinful desires, which war against your soul.

1 John 2:15-1715Do not love the world or anything in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him.  16For everything in the world–the cravings of sinful man, the lust of his eyes and the boasting of what he has and does–comes not from the Father but from the world.  17The world and its desires pass away, but the man who does the will of God lives forever.

(V.26b)… because he was looking ahead to his reward.   Note the under-mentioned instances of his reward:

Intimate Relationship with God: Exodus 24:1-2 – Then he said to Moses, “Come up to the LORD, you and Aaron, Nadab and Abihu, and seventy of the elders of Israel. You are to worship at a distance, 2but Moses alone is to approach the LORD; the others must not come near. And the people may not come up with him.”

Exodus 33:11 – The LORD would speak to Moses face to face, as a man speaks with his friend. Then Moses would return to the camp, but his young aide Joshua son of Nun did not leave the tent.

Numbers 12:4-84At once the LORD said to Moses, Aaron and Miriam, “Come out to the Tent of Meeting, all three of you.” So the three of them came out.  5Then the LORD came down in a pillar of cloud; he stood at the entrance to the Tent and summoned Aaron and Miriam. When both of them stepped forward, 6he said, “Listen to my words:

“When a prophet of the LORD is among you, I reveal myself to him in visions, I speak to him in dreams.  7But this is not true of my servant Moses; he is faithful in all my house.  8With him I speak face to face, clearly and not in riddles; he sees the form of the LORD. Why then were you not afraid to speak against my servant Moses?”

Deuteronomy 34:10-1210Since then, no prophet has risen in Israel like Moses, whom the LORD knew face to face, 11who did all those miraculous signs and wonders the LORD sent him to do in Egypt–to Pharaoh and to all his officials and to his whole land.  12For no one has ever shown the mighty power or performed the awesome deeds that Moses did in the sight of all Israel.

Good Health:  Deuteronomy 34:7 – Moses was a hundred and twenty years old when he died, yet his eyes were not weak nor his strength gone.  This exemplifies: 1 Thessalonians 5:23-24 – 23May God himself, the God of peace, sanctify you through and through. May your whole spirit, soul and body be kept blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.  24The one who calls you is faithful and he will do it.

3 John 2 – Dear friend, I pray that you may enjoy good health and that all may go well with you, even as your soul is getting along well.

Extra-ordinary BurialDeuteronomy 34:5-65And Moses the servant of the LORD died there in Moab, as the LORD had said.  6He buried him in Moab, in the valley opposite Beth Peor, but to this day no one knows where his grave is.

Note Jude 9 – But even the archangel Michael, when he was disputing with the devil about the body of Moses, did not dare to bring a slanderous accusation against him, but said, “The Lord rebuke you!”

Eternal Life (as evidenced by his appearance with Elijah on the “Mount of Transfiguration”)Luke 9:30-3130Two men, Moses and Elijah, 31appeared in glorious splendor, talking with Jesus. They spoke about his departure, which he was about to bring to fulfillment at Jerusalem.

Let us thank the Lord for the hope contained in:

Luke 18:29-3029“I tell you the truth,” Jesus said to them, “no one who has left home or wife or brothers or parents or children for the sake of the kingdom of God 30will fail to receive many times as much in this age and, in the age to come, eternal life.”

Hebrews 6:10-1210God is not unjust; he will not forget your work and the love you have shown him as you have helped his people and continue to help them.  11We want each of you to show this same diligence to the very end, in order to make your hope sure.  12We do not want you to become lazy, but to imitate those who through faith and patience inherit what has been promised.

Note Philippians 3:7-97But whatever was to my profit I now consider loss for the sake of Christ.  8What is more, I consider everything a loss compared to the surpassing greatness of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord, for whose sake I have lost all things. I consider them rubbish, that I may gain Christ 9and be found in him, not having a righteousness of my own that comes from the law, but that which is through faith in Christ–the righteousness that comes from God and is by faith.
