FAITH

Text:  Hebrews 11

Lesson Six – V.8-10

Examples of the ancients who were commended for their faith: (Cont’d.)

ABRAHAM [Part 1]: V.8-108By faith Abraham, when called to go to a place he would later receive as his inheritance, obeyed and went, even though he did not know where he was going.  9By faith he made his home in the promised land like a stranger in a foreign country; he lived in tents, as did Isaac and Jacob, who were heirs with him of the same promise.  10For he was looking forward to the city with foundations, whose architect and builder is God.

(V.8)when calledGenesis 12:1-3 – The LORD had said to Abram, “Leave your country, your people and your father’s household and go to the land I will show you.

2“I will make you into a great nation and I will bless you; I will make your name great, and you will be a blessing.  3I will bless those who bless you, and whoever curses you I will curse; and all peoples on earth will be blessed through you.”

Note Genesis 11:31-3231Terah took his son Abram, his grandson Lot son of Haran, and his daughter-in-law Sarai, the wife of his son Abram, and together they set out from Ur of the Chaldeans to go to Canaan. But when they came to Haran, they settled there.

32Terah lived 205 years, and he died in Haran.

Genesis 12:4-54So Abram left, as the LORD had told him; and Lot went with him. Abram was seventy-five years old when he set out from Haran.  5He took his wife Sarai, his nephew Lot, all the possessions they had accumulated and the people they had acquired in Haran, and they set out for the land of Canaan, and they arrived there.

Abraham’s “call” is ratified by:

Joshua 24:2-32Joshua said to all the people, “This is what the LORD, the God of Israel, says: ‘Long ago your forefathers, including Terah the father of Abraham and Nahor, lived beyond the River and worshiped other gods.  3But I took your father Abraham from the land beyond the River and led him throughout Canaan and gave him many descendants. I gave him Isaac,

Acts 7:2-72To this he replied: “Brothers and fathers, listen to me! The God of glory appeared to our father Abraham while he was still in Mesopotamia, before he lived in Haran.  3“Leave your country and your people,’ God said, ‘and go to the land I will show you.’

4“So he left the land of the Chaldeans and settled in Haran. After the death of his father, God sent him to this land where you are now living.  5He gave him no inheritance here, not even a foot of ground. But God promised him that he and his descendants after him would possess the land, even though at that time Abraham had no child.  6God spoke to him in this way: ‘Your descendants will be strangers in a country not their own, and they will be enslaved and mistreated four hundred years.  7But I will punish the nation they serve as slaves,’ God said, ‘and afterward they will come out of that country and worship me in this place.’

With reference to Acts 7:6-7, let us thank the Lord for the comfort provided as follows:

John 16:33 (Amplified Bible) – I have told you these things, so that in Me you may have [perfect] peace and confidence. In the world you have tribulation and trials and distress and frustration; but be of good cheer [take courage; be confident, certain, undaunted]! For I have overcome the world. [I have deprived it of power to harm you and have conquered it for you.]

(V.9)he made his home in the promised land like a stranger in a foreign countryCompare 1 Peter 2:11-1211Dear friends, I urge you, as aliens and strangers in the world, to abstain from sinful desires, which war against your soul.  12Live such good lives among the pagans that, though they accuse you of doing wrong, they may see your good deeds and glorify God on the day he visits us.

Let us ask the Lord to help us to “hear.”

(V.10) For he was looking forward to the city with foundations, whose architect and builder is GodHe was aware of the fate of man-made cities. (See Genesis 11:1-9; 19:23-28.)

Let us thank the Lord for that city and ask Him to help us to emulate Abraham in “looking forward” to it.  Note:

Philippians 3:20-2120But our citizenship is in heaven. And we eagerly await a Savior from there, the Lord Jesus Christ, 21who, by the power that enables him to bring everything under his control, will transform our lowly bodies so that they will be like his glorious body.

Colossians 3:1-4 – Since, then, you have been raised with Christ, set your hearts on things above, where Christ is seated at the right hand of God.  2Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things.  3For you died, and your life is now hidden with Christ in God.  4When Christ, who is your life, appears, then you also will appear with him in glory.

Hebrews 11:13-1613All these people were still living by faith when they died. They did not receive the things promised; they only saw them and welcomed them from a distance. And they admitted that they were aliens and strangers on earth.  14People who say such things show that they are looking for a country of their own.  15If they had been thinking of the country they had left, they would have had opportunity to return.  16Instead, they were longing for a better country–a heavenly one. Therefore God is not ashamed to be called their God, for he has prepared a city for them.

Hebrews 13:14-1614For here we do not have an enduring city, but we are looking for the city that is to come.

15Through Jesus, therefore, let us continually offer to God a sacrifice of praise–the fruit of lips that confess his name.  16And do not forget to do good and to share with others, for with such sacrifices God is pleased.

Revelation 21:2, 102I saw the Holy City, the new Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, prepared as a bride beautifully dressed for her husband.

10And he carried me away in the Spirit to a mountain great and high, and showed me the Holy City, Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God.
