KNOWING GOD – THE GOD OF MIRACLES – Lesson Sixteen

EUTYCHUS RAISED FROM THE DEAD AT TROAS

Acts 20:7-127On the first day of the week we came together to break bread. Paul spoke to the people and, because he intended to leave the next day, kept on talking until midnight. 8There were many lamps in the upstairs room where we were meeting. 9Seated in a window was a young man named Eutychus, who was sinking into a deep sleep as Paul talked on and on. When he was sound asleep, he fell to the ground from the third story and was picked up dead. 10Paul went down, threw himself on the young man and put his arms around him. “Don’t be alarmed,” he said. “He’s alive!” 11Then he went upstairs again and broke bread and ate. After talking until daylight, he left. 12The people took the young man home alive and were greatly comforted.

V.7On the first day of the weekOther mention:  John 20:1, 19, 261Early on the first day of the week, while it was still dark, Mary Magdalene went to the tomb and saw that the stone had been removed from the entrance.

19On the evening of that first day of the week, when the disciples were together, with the doors locked for fear of the Jews, Jesus came and stood among them and said, “Peace be with you!”

26A week later his disciples were in the house again, and Thomas was with them. Though the doors were locked, Jesus came and stood among them and said, “Peace be with you!”

1 Corinthians 16:2 – On the first day of every week, each one of you should set aside a sum of money in keeping with his income, saving it up, so that when I come no collections will have to be made.

Note that “the first day of the week” is also called “the Lord’s Day” in Revelation 1:10 – On the Lord’s Day I was in the Spirit, and I heard behind me a loud voice like a trumpet,

We came togetherThis included Luke (writer of Acts), the believers of Troas and those mentioned in Acts 20:4-6 – 4He was accompanied by Sopater son of Pyrrhus from Berea, Aristarchus and Secundus from Thessalonica, Gaius from Derbe, Timothy also, and Tychicus and Trophimus from the province of Asia.  5These men went on ahead and waited for us at Troas.  6 But we sailed from Philippi after the Feast of Unleavened Bread, and five days later joined the others at Troas, where we stayed seven days.

TroasOther mention re Paul’s ministry there: Acts 16:6-96Paul and his companions traveled throughout the region of Phrygia and Galatia, having been kept by the Holy Spirit from preaching the word in the province of Asia.  7When they came to the border of Mysia, they tried to enter Bithynia, but the Spirit of Jesus would not allow them to.  8So they passed by Mysia and went down to Troas.  9During the night Paul had a vision of a man of Macedonia standing and begging him, “Come over to Macedonia and help us.”

2 Corinthians 2:12-1312Now when I went to Troas to preach the gospel of Christ and found that the Lord had opened a door for me, 13I still had no peace of mind, because I did not find my brother Titus there. So I said good-by to them and went on to Macedonia.

2 Timothy 4:13 – When you come, bring the cloak that I left with Carpus at Troas, and my scrolls, especially the parchments.

Note that since Paul’s conversion, he had new companions, who were Christians, in contrast to his old companions.  See Acts 22:9, 11.

To break bread Note other instances: Acts 2:42, 4642They devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching and to the fellowship, to the breaking of bread and to prayer.

46Every day they continued to meet together in the temple courts. They broke bread in their homes and ate together with glad and sincere hearts,

V.10Paul went down, threw himself on the young man and put his arms around him. “Don’t be alarmed,” he said. “He’s alive!”  See:  (a) 1 Kings 17:17-24 (V.24 – Then the woman said to Elijah, “Now I know that you are a man of God and that the word of the LORD from your mouth is the truth.”)   Note the effect of this miracle as well as the following.

1 Kings 18:38-3938Then the fire of the LORD fell and burned up the sacrifice, the wood, the stones and the soil, and also licked up the water in the trench.

39When all the people saw this, they fell prostrate and cried, “The LORD–he is God! The LORD–he is God!”

John 10:37-3837Do not believe me unless I do what my Father does.  38But if I do it, even though you do not believe me, believe the miracles, that you may know and understand that the Father is in me, and I in the Father.”

John 20:30-3130Jesus did many other miraculous signs in the presence of his disciples, which are not recorded in this book.  31But these are written that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that by believing you may have life in his name.

(b) 2 Kings 4:31-37.

ApplicationIn order to have the Gift of Miracles operating in our time, let us petition the GOD OF MIRACLES as Gideon and Habakkuk did.

Judges 6:12-1312When the angel of the LORD appeared to Gideon, he said, “The LORD is with you, mighty warrior.”

13“But sir,” Gideon replied, “if the LORD is with us, why has all this happened to us? Where are all his wonders that our fathers told us about when they said, `Did not the LORD bring us up out of Egypt?’ But now the LORD has abandoned us and put us into the hand of Midian.”

Habakkuk 3:1-2 – A prayer of Habakkuk the prophet. On shigionoth.

2LORD, I have heard of your fame; I stand in awe of your deeds, O LORD. Renew them in our day, in our time make them known; in wrath remember mercy.

On shigionothHabakkuk 3:1 (AMP) – A PRAYER of Habakkuk the prophet, set to wild, enthusiastic, and triumphal music.
